Battery Point Lighthouse Keeper's Log

We woke up to a misty morning with a light rain.  I did my regular chores minus the flag.  Perhaps most importantly, I put Teare's tea water on to boil...

After our breakfast, it was time to get busy.  We cleaned the windows in the entry way and washed the curtains.  We also cleaned the tables, chairs, woodwork, and artifacts in this area.  (All good inside jobs!)

We had folks from all over again today during our tours from 2:15-4:00.  I asked the guests in the very last tour of the day where they were from.  The response was Cleveland, Ohio!  The parents were from Hudson and the son and his wife were from Ohio City in Cleveland.  I mentioned we were from Seville. They then provided more detail including the fact that the young man from Ohio City had attended the College of Wooster, having graduated in 2015.  Besides yet another episode of feeling older, it was a fun "small world" discovery! We had 39 visitors and collected $247.85 in donations and sales.

Special thanks to Chris Wilder for sharing the above cartoon!

After tours were complete, I went out to play "sheep dog" and warn unsuspecting visitors about the incoming tide.  This also provides an opportunity to let people know when we are open for tours.  In a very real way, it ends up being an inadvertent marketing swing.  One group from Washington state said they would be back tomorrow when I invited them to take the tour.  The tours, gift shop, donations, and sales generated are really the source of funds that keep this place open, occupied, and maintained.  The last guy to venture over was walking up the walk and I gave my usual "just want you to know the tide is coming in" warning.  He said, "I'll just be 5 minutes".  As he was leaving he asked, "aren't you leaving?'  "No", I answered, "I live here".  I watched as he slipped off a rock and got wet up to his calves...

The lighthouse from the NW corner.  Note the walls are 2 ft. thick granite block.

We have our meals in the Radio Room.  This is so named because when Battery Point was a US Coast Guard Station, this room housed their communication equipment.  There is a tinted shade we lower when the sun is coming in.  This provides a break from the sun, keeps the heat down in the room, and also provides some measure of privacy as the outside is somewhat reflective in the daytime.  Teare, being a little ornery, likes to wait until people are taking selfies with their back to us and then put her hand up between the shade and window in a pleading manner.  There must be more than a few photos where they are looking at them later and notice a hand, and ONLY a hand, in the window!

Teare came out when the sun did...

We touched base with Karen who supplies us with our gift shop merchandise and now the day is winding down.

Thanks for following the blog!  We welcome your feedback and comments!
