Welcome to the Drive Across America, Lighthouse, & Olympic Track & Field Trials Blog! If you tuned in to follow the lighthouse blog, you are getting the bonus of the drive across the country to get there as well as the Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon afterwards. Thank you for your interest in our adventures and we are happy to take you with us on this journey. First, some BACKGROUND: Three years ago, Teare and I had a great trip to visit with Betsy and stay at a condo in Lake Tahoe, California. The condo was located at the base of the Heavenly Ski Resort and we had a great time hiking and biking around the southern edge of Lake Tahoe. Afterwards, I flew home and returned to work but since it was Summer, Teare returned to Betsy's apartment in Redding, CA. Betsy's friend Liz Rice and her mother Diana joined them and off they went on a driving trip which culminated in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Along the way, they stopped at Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City, CA. Teare was very impressed with Battery Point and at the time of her visit found out that volunteers can operate the lighthouse in exchange for lodging in the lighthouse. At that time she mentioned that she would like to do this in the future. She even provided a month in the future when she knew we would both be retired from our full time positions and be able to assume the duties of Lighthouse Keepers. When she returned from this trip, we discussed it and agreed it would be a great adventure unlike anything we had ever done. We went through the application process and were approved as keepers for June of 2016! Now, some three years later, June of 2016 is drawing very near... So WELCOME as we take this journey across the country and live and operate a lighthouse. We have great stops planned along the way and it all begins this Saturday, May, 14, 2016. Talk with you soon!
